This book had a great slow build, revealing little bits and pieces as the story unfolded. Then, wham, it all started to unravel, come apart, come together, and my pulse picked up and I couldn’t read the pages fast enough. Dark, gritty, painful, and full of despair, there was very little light in this story. But it was compelling, and the characters, they held on, they stood up, and they paid for those actions. They didn’t give up though, because that was not an option for them, the consequences of giving up too severe. That makes the endings, the relief they feel, all the sweeter for them when it happens. Of course, we get our obligatory Van moment in the book, because what would a book in this series be without him? Loved Luke to death, loved Vera even more, and can’t wait for Tomas!
